A nineteenth century church overlooking the Iron Bridge, St Luke's is situated on a steep hill accessible by 109 steps from The Square or up the narrow road. Parking is available on public car parks in the town, but not near the church.
Due to the steepness of the ground, the tower was placed at the east end of the church and the chancel to the west.
The church was built in yellow brick by Thomas Smith of Madeley in the 1860s to serve the growing populations of the area. Inside, there are galleries around three sides, supported by cast iron columns which rise to the roof. There are locally made Jackfield tiles, and striking stained glass in the west window by David Evans of Shrewsbury. Originally the church seated over 1,000.
Steeped in the history of the Gorge, it has much to offer the visitor.
