Lee Brockhurst

St Peter’s

St Peter’s Church is situated on the centre of the village of Lee Brockhurst about 300 yards off the A49 (signposted to Lee Brockhurst and Aston). Access can also be gained from Wem which is about 5 miles north-west of Lee Brockhurst. Access on both roads is by a narrow lane with bends and care should be taken.

There is no dedicated church parking but cars can be parked alongside the churchyard wall and the neighbour adjacent to the church yard allows parking across the road providing access is not obstructed.

Access for those with disability is good, we have just one very shallow step at the main church door. Mobility scooters, wheelchairs and other mobility devices manage this very well.

The nave of the church is Norman, dated 12th century, the chancel is Victorian as are the vestry and the porch. Many changes to the original building were made by the Victorians, in particular during the incumbency of The Reverend Henry Postlethwaite. The church is built from sandstone quarried at nearby Grinshill.

Of special interest are the two original small round headed windows on the south and north walls of the nave. There is an attractive tympanium over the porch doors which depicts St Peter’s Keys. Behind the Altar is a carved wooden Reredos depicting the Last Supper in the centre and symbols of The Bread and Wine on either side, this is thought to have been carved by the wife of The Rev. Henry Postlethwaite.

There is a large memorial plaque immediately opposite the church door to John Henshaw whose sister Rebecca married The Rector of Lee Brockhurst, George Walford. John Henshaw was a successful and respected Wem solicitor who was a co-benefactor to St Peter’s, Lee Brockhurst. Although the memorial has been renovated the company would not undertake inking in the script .

In the church yard is a Commonwealth Grave to ??? who also had a civilian grave nearby.

St Peter’s has two bells situated in a bellcote the older of the two bells is 15th Century and the newer is 18th century. These have recently been renovated and re-hung. (see photo)

Services of either Holy Communion or Morning Prayer are held at 11.15 every Sunday except on the 5th Sunday of the month when Benefice services are held in one of our three churches.

Access to the church is by arrangement. Phone numbers are displayed on the Notice board at the gate and in the porch.
